what is social work?

Social work is a university-qualified profession dedicated to assisting people to improve their lives, with a focus on their personal and social wellbeing.

Social workers take the time needed to build relationships with people so that together they can consider all aspects of their situation, including their strengths and capacities, as well as the areas where they need help. They offer solutions, supports and pathways that make sense in the context of the person’s environment, preferences and abilities.

As qualified professionals, social workers have the skills and knowledge to support individuals, families, groups and communities. You’ll find social workers in a wide range of organisations and settings including federal and state governments, hospitals, schools, community services organisations, and private practice.  (AASW, 2025)

What about in the NDIS?

A social worker within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plays a vital role in supporting individuals with disabilities to achieve their personal goals and improve their quality of life. These professionals are dedicated to empowering NDIS participants by providing personalized support, advocacy, and resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Individualised Planning: Social workers collaborate with NDIS participants to develop tailored plans that align with their aspirations, needs, and goals.
  • Advocacy: They advocate for participants' rights, ensuring they have access to the necessary services and supports outlined in their NDIS plans.
  • Support Coordination: Social workers help participants navigate the NDIS system, connecting them with appropriate service providers and community resources.
  • Capacity Building: They provide training and support to enhance participants' skills, independence, and overall well-being.
  • Emotional and Social Support: Social workers offer counseling and emotional support to help participants and their families manage challenges and build resilience.

By fostering a holistic and person-centered approach, social workers within the NDIS are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities, promoting social inclusion, and ensuring participants receive the highest quality of care and support.
